GOAL: SELF-EFFICACY

Make Life Easier By Doing This 1 Thing Consistently

Do hard things. Keep showing up. 💪

Living eventually becomes easier when you consistently do hard things. Alternatively, living becomes easier when you recognize how hard the things you're doing actually are.

Remember that time in Dragon Ball (I've never watched Dragon Ball) where Goku trained on a planet that had stronger gravity? Then when he went back to his own planet, he could fly because the gravity wasn't as strong?

Same concept.

A thing is hard because you haven't done it a lot. The secret to making something easy and not scary is to do it a lot. The more you do it, the easier it becomes.

Try literally counting it.

For example, I hate driving. If I had any weakness, it would be driving. Don't ask me why, I just hate it. I think it has to do with the responsibility of sharing the road with other people and having to be mindful of my surroundings. It's stressful.

To become aware of how easy it gets, I'll count the number of times I actually drive. I'll give myself 100 Driving Events.

Let "Driving Event" be defined as "get from Point A to Point B". Then I'll count the number of Driving Events I have accomplished till I get to 100. It doesn't have to be far either. It could be just driving 5 minutes to the grocery store.

I used to be anxious about making phone calls. But after 100 or more phone calls from working the "Phones Shift" at my job, I no longer have anxiety about talking to people on the phone. (That's a lie, I still do, but it's not as bad as before).

Try it: Give yourself a number of times to do something. It could be 50, or 100, or 1000, or 10,000.

You'd be amazed how much easier something becomes by virtue of simply showing up.

Apply this to anything. Wanna get better at drawing hands? Draw 100 hand poses. Wanna get better at making spaghetti? Cook spaghetti 100 times. Wanna feel less anxious about public speaking? Raise your hand in class 76 times, and do a class presentation 24 times, for a grand total of 100 "Public Speaking Events" - but not before practicing in front of a mirror/camera 100 times first.

Life is just a numbers game, so crank up your numbers.

Yes, you can close your eyes while doing it. You can do it gingerly, or rushedly, or badly, or poorly. It all counts.

Do what scares you until it doesn't.

Do what's hard until it isn't.

Start now.

SELF-DISCOVERY

  1. What do you want to get better at?

  2. How many times have you actually done it?

  3. Do you want to get better at it enough to do it unglamorously for an ungodly number of times?
